Living in the old Jiangnan era
Before going to Wuzhen, my impression of homestays was limited to 'cleanliness is enough'. But this time staying at the Wuzhen Guest House in Wuzhen Scenic Area, Tongxiang completely refreshed my understanding of 'staying'.
I arrived at Xizha in the evening, completed the procedures at the tourist service center, checked my luggage directly into my room, and walked along the stone road. On both sides of the old house, the wooden door panels are mottled, and the lanterns on the top of the head have just lit up. The warm light shines on the bluestone board, and there is a slight echo when stepping on it. After walking for about five minutes, I arrived at the riverside room I had booked. At the moment I pushed the door open, I stood at the door for several seconds stunned.
The room is not big, about thirty square meters, but every inch exudes a sense of refinement. The ground is paved with green bricks, not antique tiles. Stepping on it creates a subtle unevenness, as if stepping on an old house. The bed is a wooden frame bed with delicate carvings, but the mattress has been changed - thick, supportive, and not soft and collapsed. When lying down, the waist and back are firmly caught, not the feeling of sinking to the bottom. The blanket was fluffy and clean, with a scent of sun exposure. There were two pillows, one high and one low. I chose the low one, and my neck finally didn't wake me up in the middle of the night.
The window is the one that makes me reluctant to move. Pushing open is the Xishi River, with the water surface less than two meters away from the window sill. The black roofed boat glides slowly, its oars shattering a river of lights. I sat by the window for ten minutes, lost in thought. The sound of the river was neither too loud nor too noisy, like someone softly humming a song in their ear, more effective than any white noise app. At night, when the lights were turned off and the curtains were pulled open, the river lights came in, not bright but visible enough. The whole room felt like it was soaking in water, quiet and indescribable.
The bathroom is also worth mentioning. It's not the cold and hard ceramic tiles of hotels, but rather antique green tiles used to stick to the walls. The water pressure of the showerhead is sufficient, and the hot water comes in five seconds, hitting the shoulders vigorously. The spare parts are osmanthus scented washing and nursing suits, not cheap essence. After washing, the body is fresh and refreshing, like walking under the osmanthus tree. The towel is thick and soft, with a enveloping feeling when wrapped around the body, not as thin and translucent as hotels.
The sound insulation is surprisingly good. Close the window, and the sound of boats and human voices outside are separated into a thin layer of background noise, as if listening to the world through a layer of water. I slept for a whole eight hours at night, and when the alarm clock went off, I didn't believe it - I was notorious for my light sleep.
In the morning, I went to the water market with my room card to get free morning tea guests, a bowl of Wonton, two Dingsheng cakes, and a cup of soybean milk. The heat came out of the bowl, and the grandma across from me was washing vegetables on the stone steps. The sunlight leaked through the cracks in the tiles, and I suddenly felt like I was not traveling, but living a life.
On the day of check-out, I stood for a while longer as sunlight streamed in through the wooden window frames. There was also a osmanthus cake given by the landlord's aunt by the bedside. Walking out of the West Gate and looking back, the blue tiles and white walls were quiet in the morning light.

It's a shame to say that after walking through so many hotels, I always thought that "staying in a homestay" was the exclusive right of young people. It wasn't until this time, while on a business trip, that I turned into Wuzhen West Gate and checked into the Wuzhen Guest House in the scenic area that I realized my previous understanding of the word "homestay" was too shallow.
Check in is at 5 pm. Transfer to a bus from Tongxiang High speed Railway Station to Xizha. When you leave the station, the sunset hits the river, shattering into a river of gold. I went to the tourist service center to complete the procedures, and the staff checked the information and directly arranged for my luggage to be checked into my room. I walked empty handed along Xizha Street, with Ming and Qing Dynasty old houses lining the way, and wooden doors and windows mottled with the patterns of time. After walking for about five minutes, I arrived at the water facing room I had booked.
At the moment I pushed the door open, I was stunned - this is not a 'renovated old house', it clearly presents a whole period of old time in front of you. Wooden carved window frames, blue brick floors, and old-fashioned chandeliers hanging from the top of the head all exude the atmosphere of the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China. However, upon turning around, one can see the independent bathroom, air conditioning, 24-hour hot water, free WiFi, satellite TV, and modern facilities hidden in the antique leather bag, which are easy to use but not abrupt. The most wonderful thing is that window - when I pushed it open, I saw the Xishi River. The water surface was only two meters away from the window sill, and the black boat slowly passed by. The blue cloth headscarf of the boatwoman flickered in the wind. I stood by the window for ten minutes, forgetting that I was here for a business trip.
The bed is a common wooden frame bed in old houses, but the mattress has obviously been replaced. It is thick and supportive, and the blanket is fluffy and clean. It was not noisy, like white noise, and I fell asleep faster than at home. The next morning at 6:30, I woke up outside the window. The thin mist had not yet dissipated, and there was the sound of a boatwoman rowing on the river. At that moment, I really felt like I was not a resident, but a family in this ancient town.
Go to the water market to have breakfast at seven o'clock - this is the exclusive benefit for residents in the scenic spot. Get Wonton, Shaobing (Baked cake in griddle) and Dingsheng cake free of charge with your room card. I sat on a stone bench by the river holding a bowl, with hot air coming out of the bowl. The grandma across from me was pounding her clothes on the stone steps. This scene was more touching than any internet celebrity check-in point. The landlord is a local couple. When we met in the morning, the aunt smiled and asked, "Did you sleep well?" She even stuffed two pieces of osmanthus cake she made herself and said, "Take it with you on the way. It's not a trained language, it's really treating you like a guest or neighbor.
On the day of check-out, I returned my room card to the front desk and the staff helped me deliver my luggage directly to the exit of the scenic area, saving me the hassle of going back. Walking out of the West Gate and looking back, the blue tiles and white walls were quiet in the morning light, and the last black roofed boat on the river was slowly approaching the shore.
